Zero emission vehicles are a vital tool for combatting climate change and air pollution. Transportation is a major driver of climate change, with 28% of GHG emissions originating from this sector. Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles also produce a disproportionate amount of criteria pollutants, such as particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. In an effort to decarbonize, the public transit sector has begun to transition to zero emission technology, using both battery electric and fuel cell electric technology on transit buses.
The zero emission bus (ZEB) industry has experienced rapid growth in recent years. CALSTART, which is a nonprofit organization that advances the clean transportation industry, publishes the Zeroing in on ZEBs report. This report is CALSTART’s annual inventory of ZEB deployments in the United States and Canada. This data is important because many states have prioritized the transition to ZEBs. This report provides a good snapshot into the state of the ZEB industry. This session will present the results of the 2023 edition of the Zeroing in on ZEBs report. This session will discuss ZEB market trends and the policy and economic factors that drive adoption of this technology. This session will also discuss barriers to ZEB adoption.
