The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (HJAIA) is currently in the implementation phase of several improvements projects for their Plane Train System (the airside Automated People Mover (APM) for ATL); viz., to refurbish existing switches, west extension of the track to enhance the efficiency of the APM system, and purchase of additional vehicles for the world’s busiest airport, all while maintaining the operations of a must-have transportation backbone of the airport. These undertakings will improve system reliability, headways and passenger carrying capacity of the system to address the current and future demand growth. By the numbers, the APM fleet size will be increased from 59 to 73 cars, the guideway extended by about 700’ and passenger capacities transported per hour per direction (PPHPD) increased by about 15%. Although final completion of the work is scheduled to be May 2025, the project team is committed to ensure that HJAIA is able to utilize the APM systems for the passenger connectivity of the Airside concourses with minimal impacts. The paper will discuss the location specific considerations and active interproject and stakeholder coordination that is required to ensure the success of such work. Additionally, the paper will discuss other on-going efforts and planning to assess HJAIA's on-going passenger demand needs and Plane Train capacity well beyond this timeframe as a part of future masterplan development.
