This paper provides background information and discusses technical challenges associated with replacing the original thirteen guideway pivot switches on the Plane-Train Automated People Mover at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia, USA during nightly maintenance shutdowns. This is the world's busiest airport based on passenger traffic so service interruptions during high passenger traffic were not a viable option. Technical challenges include developing a cutover plan so major structural elements of the switches can be isolated then replaced within nightly shutdowns, moving large materials such as switch girders to the switch and developing a nightly system assurance plan to ensure the system is safe for passenger traffic.
