Edge AI for Real-Time Monitoring and Proactive Traffic Safety Management

The significance of real-time monitoring and proactive safety measures cannot be overstated. This presentation provides a comprehensive showcase of the pioneering integration of Edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) within traffic management systems. This empowers real-time monitoring and immediate data analysis and decision-making at the edge right where it's needed. We will demonstrate real-world use cases and implementations funded by two ongoing USDOT Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) projects in collaboration with state and local DOTs. These projects span diverse contexts, including urban environments such as the City of Bellevue, WA, City of Lynnwood, WA, and more remote rural and tribal areas like The Confederated Tribes of Yakama Nation. The project received the prestigious 2023 Innovative Project Award from the FHWA Build a Better Mousetrap program. We delve into the transformative power of Edge AI, enabling traffic agencies to actively monitor and respond to real-time traffic conditions, ensuring swift incident detection and the seamless optimization of traffic flow. With the deployment of state-of-the-art AI technologies, this approach not only promises enhanced safety but also heralds a more efficient future for both road users and transportation systems at large.
