Transportation professionals are well aware of the potential impacts of automated vehicles on cities, suburbs, and rural areas, as well as on all facets of transportation planning, policy, design, and financing. The world’s largest conference dedicated to automated vehicles is the Automated Road Transportation Symposium (ARTS), held annually. The event convenes industry, government, and academia from around the world to address complex technology, operations, and policy issues in the area of automated and autonomous vehicles. Passenger cars, freight vehicles, public transit, and aerial vehicles are all a part of ARTS, and all of these topics are of interest to ITE members, whether they are in the public, private, nonprofit, or academic sectors. ARTS focuses on how research can best enable progress in the next 18-24 months on critical policy, operations and safety topics such as: freight, transit and passenger vehicle commercialization, safety and security assurance, sustainability & climate; digital and physical infrastructure; and defining and encoding legislation and policy for AV use.
ARTS consists of keynotes and plenary sessions, but the most cutting edge discussions occur in the dozens of breakout sessions on topics ranging from technical issues to regulations to pilot project findings. This presentation will summarize for the ASCE audience major takeaways from the dozens of ARTS breakout sessions. Along with providing a report on the “state of the practice,” the presentation will highlight the most immediate technology, policy, and research needs.
