The paper will present the sustainable development (SD) opportunities that exist at transportation agencies, both in-house and on-field. In-house opportunities include near-zero emission fleet, for Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) vehicles, net-zero emissions buildings, campuses, and installations, promoting climate- and sustainability-focused workforce, and incorporating environmental justice in decision making. On-field relates to each phase of infrastructure development (planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, monitoring, and end-of-life). The research is also documenting and evaluating trends in the SD metrics in transportation, and developing exposure metrics for sustainability assessment. Furthermore, the research is identifying ways to integrate SD into INDOT’s culture. Finally, the research is developing SD business-case framework through the measurement of the long-term economic costs and benefits associated with SD.
