Abstract: The low-lying countries face seasonal floods almost every year. Due to the effects of climate change, inundation areas due to floods will increase. It may induce a rise in road maintenance frequency and a decrease in pavement life. The situation may get worse if traffic overloading is combined with the flood scenario. Traffic overloading is a commonly observed practice in many developing countries. This study aims to evaluate the effect of variable moisture on flexible pavement resembling flooding and the recovery period after the recession of flood water. It will also evaluate the effects of traffic overloading and variations in tire pressure on the moist pavement. To determine the stresses, strains, and deformations in the flexible pavement for combinations of moisture and ranges of overloading and tire pressure, KENPAVE, a layered elastic system software, conducts the analyses. Empirical models are used to predict the fatigue and rutting lives of the pavement using the strains at critical locations. It is found that moisture reduces the pavement life significantly. Additionally, traffic overload and higher tire pressure accelerate the damage to the moist pavement. However, inverted pavement with a stabilized base course reduces the severity of the problem. The findings of the study may guide road engineers in realizing the severity of climate change effects on pavement. Moreover, it will help them find a solution to the problem.
