In the midst of the public's focus on autonomous cars, trucks, and drones, a new opportunity for high-capacity transit corridors has emerged. This presentation will explore the practical application of automated technology to Bus Rapid Transit (BRT). With deployment already underway globally, this technology can serve as a catalyst to reimagine the future of transport.
The comparison of Light Rail Transit (LRT) and BRT will be discussed in terms of accessibility features, route flexibility, and infrastructure costs. The presentation will also highlight how autonomous vehicle technology can enhance BRT, making it competitive with LRT, and improving traditional bus transit quality.
The Federal Transit Administration's Strategic Transit Automation Research Plan will be referenced, with a focus on the vision for Automated BRT (ABRT). This includes supporting drivers, improved vehicle operation, increased passenger capacity, and simplified accessibility for people with disabilities.
The presentation will further delve into the benefits of ABRT, such as fewer collisions, reduced driver stress, and increased roadway usability, and greater curbside efficiency and safety. The concept of Automated Bus Platooning will be explored, demonstrating how it can increase passenger capacity on high-volume routes and improve fleet optimization.
The presentation will conclude with integration strategies of ABRT into the planning process of future transit systems. A vision for 2030 and beyond will be outlined, identifying potential innovations and business opportunities catalyzed by the adoption of ABRT, thereby creating a thriving entrepreneurial ecosystem in the transit sector.
