Tufuor is an assistant research professor at the Auburn University Transportation Research Institute. Tufuor received his Ph.D. at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, holds an M.Sc. in Transport Planning and Engineering from the University of Leeds, United Kingdom, and received his bachelor’s degree at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana. He has over 8 years of transport policy and planning experience at the Ghana Ministry of Roads and Highways, an equivalent of a US Federal Highway Administration. Tufuor is a registered Professional Engineer in Ghana and a member of the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Committee on Highway Capacity and Quality of Service (ACP40).
Transportation system analysis is Tufuor’s area of research with a specific focus on system performance reliability, planning and modeling, highway safety, and big data analysis. Tufuor has led and supported several federal and state DOT projects on intelligent transportation system analysis with a total budget of over US$ 2 million. Some of Tufuor’s project experience includes:
• Evaluation of the Driveway Assistance Device (DAD) Systems in One-Lane Two-Way Work Zone
• Performance Reliability and Safety Index for Region VII Highways
• Intelligent Work Zone Using Automatic Queue Detection Systems.
Tufuor’s research has resulted in multiple published articles in highly rated peer-reviewed journals. His research on applying recent technology in intelligent transportation systems has been nationally and internationally recognized. The most recent recognitions include the 2019 Best Paper Award from the TRB Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee, the 2018 International Highway Engineering Exchange Program Award, and the 2018 Intelligent Transportation Systems Heartland Research Award. The American Society of Civil Engineers in 2022, selected his work on a system performance calibration framework as one of the ASCE Editor’s Choice for the Transportation and Development Institute and it was nominated for the prestigious Arthur Wellington Prize award.
