Dr. Vasantha Wickramasinghe is a senior lecturer attached to the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya, SRI LANKA. He has worked on “Evaluation of the current trends and prospects of bus transportation - Will Buses be the least preferred mode of transportation in the future” for the MEng in Hokkadio University, JAPAN. He has worked on “Analytical Tourism Disaster Management Framework for Sustainable Tourism Following a Sudden Calamity” for his PhD. His PhD thesis has introduced qualitative and quantitative evaluation concepts to access the perception of tourists upon a sudden calamity and a decision making tool combining Strengths-Weaknesses-Opportunities-Threats (SWOT) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to revive from the disaster. Further, thesis includes a novel analytical tool to brand the tourist destinations using exemplary factors. His research interests are travel behavior of pedestrians, traffic flow analysis under different side frictions, and user perception for public transportation. Besides, highway asset management and multi-criteria decision system design are also his interests.
He has published around 10 technical papers in multiple reputed SCI/Scopus indexed journals and presented more than 30 papers in international/national conferences. Some of the research work has been published in reputed journals such as Advances in Transportation Studies (ATS) Transportation Research Record, Case Studies in Transportation Policy (CSTP), TiDE, ENGINEER etc. and presented at International Conferences such as TRB, WCTR, EASTS, SAFETY, etc. He is also a member of the team from Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) on the AHEAD project.
He has currently guiding one MPhil student in the area of public transportation. He has guided one PhD scholar and 10 MScEng scholars during his career of 12 years as a senior lecturer. Currently, 6 MScEng students working under him in the area of road safety and pedestrian travel behavior. Currently he is working as Coordinator for Highway and Traffic Engineering Postgraduate programme in the University of Peradeniya.
