Dr. Young serves as the Advanced Transportation and Urban Scientist at NREL, leading the Mobility Innovations and Equity team within the Center for Innovative Mobility Science Center, and also serves as the Chief Technology Officer for the Eastern Transportation Coalition. He leads research efforts into the impacts and application of new mobility systems, technology, and transportation data, particularly in urban areas. He was appointed the technologist-in-city for the Columbus Smart City program. Which has evolved into support for cities to improve efficiency, accessibility, and convenience for citizens, with emphasis on disadvantaged communities. Dr. Young led the Urban Science pillar as part of the US DOE SMART Mobility research initiative, and initiated development of the Automated Mobility District toolkit to assess the mobility and energy impacts resulting from the deployment of automated mobility. He initiated development of the Mobility Energy Productivity metric, the central metric through which the DOE’s Energy Efficient Mobility Systems programmed is assessed.
