Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning technologies are revolutionizing the way we approach road safety and maintenance. These technologies, when applied to roadway assessment, can significantly boost efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
When properly deployed, AI can quantify the driven environment, while providing qualitative context. This combination can deliver a comprehensive, objective analysis of pavement and road marking conditions on an ongoing basis. With frequent and accurate data, transportation organizations can more effectively prioritize maintenance and capital projects, identify trends in deterioration, and predict potential infrastructure failures, while supporting human safety and taking inventory of key infrastructure assets.
A prime example of such a technology is Road Triage and its Perception Engine, an AI-driven roadway evaluation system developed by Robocist.
Leveraging state-of-the-art computer vision, machine learning, and AI technologies, this innovative technology enables transportation planners and engineers to make informed, data-driven decisions regarding roadway maintenance and safety. This presentation will provide examples of assessments conducted in North Carolina and the NCDOT. A former NCDOT Transportation Secretary described it as a "game changer" that creates new opportunities for safety, planning, and maintenance not feasible through conventional approaches.
The integration of AI and machine learning technologies in the transportation sector, holds the potential for significant advancements in road safety and maintenance. This not only enhances efficiency but also brings down costs, offering an advantageous solution to transportation organizations.
