Abstract: Natural disasters like hurricanes, wildfires, and floods pose immediate hazards and necessitate prompt and well-planned emergency evacuations in order to save lives and reduce fatalities, injuries, and property damage. This comparative study explores the potential impact of autonomous vehicles on evacuation clearance time, citing the significance of swift evacuations amid the increasing frequency, severity, and global reach of natural disasters. The study rigorously models evacuation scenarios using GIS and Vissim simulations to assess the feasibility of integrating autonomous cars into evacuation strategies for various natural disasters. The methodology places particular emphasis on comparing distinct events, enabling a comprehensive evaluation of how autonomous vehicles navigate diverse environmental and emergency conditions, including the analysis of emerging trends. Preliminary results demonstrate a promising reduction in evacuation clearance time, showcasing the potential of autonomous vehicles in optimizing evacuation and minimizing delays. Hence, the projected results may provide a comparative analysis of evacuation trends in various evacuation events, and underscore the transformative potential of autonomous vehicles in significantly reducing evacuation clearance time. The results would emphasize the significance of incorporating emerging technologies, particularly Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs), to improve evacuation strategies and preparedness.
