Bassem Andrawes is an ASCE Fellow and a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He is the Director of the Transportation Infrastructure Precast Innovation Center (TRANS-IPIC), a Tier 1 University Transportation Center (UTC). Professor Andrawes holds a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from Ain Shams University, an M.Sc. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Iowa State University, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Structures) from Georgia Institute of Technology. He has been on the faculty at the University of Illinois for over 17 years. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, Professor Andrawes worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the University of California Irvine and as a Design Engineer at Englekirk Partners Consulting Structural Engineers in Santa Ana, California. Professor Andrawes' research interests are in the areas of bridge engineering, earthquake engineering, retrofit and repair of transportation infrastructure, reinforced and precast concrete structures, and structural applications of smart and advanced materials. He is the founding Chair of the ASCE/SEI committee on "Retrofit of Structures under Dynamic Loads".
