Mr. Boenau is a recognized transportation professional engineer and has dedicated his life to transportation research, demonstration and deployment. He is active in and is a Fellow in ASCE and ITE and is also a Life Member in NSPE, ASCE and ITE. In addition, he is also a member and speaks at conferences organized by TRB, SAE, PIARC and COTA where he is active on technical committees. His most recent speaking engagements have been made jointly with younger professionals where he has incorporated an innovative mentoring approach that accelerates a young professional's recognition and acceptance into the established transportation community.
His experience includes multimodal integrated transportation research, development, evaluation, standards development and deployment of emerging advanced transportation technologies and innovative user services of new mobility options. This experience includes working in the Research Offfices of the U.S. Department of Transportation's (USDOT) Federal Transit Administration as a Division Chief responsible for research and demonstration of ITS technologies and in developing cooperative research agreements between the U.S. and other countries. He received the USDOT Secretary's Silver Medal for Meritorious Achievement for his leadership in international programs that enhanced transportation innovations around the world.
His involvement with the transportation academic community was the result of his responsibilities as Program Manager for the University Transportation Centers Program and the Transit Cooperative Research Program where he developed and managed research, demonstration and training projects that advanced the transportation state-of-the-art.
With the USDOT's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), Mr Booenau was a Highway Research Engineer, responsible for research, testing, demonstration and close collaboration with state DOTs, regional and municipal transportation agencies in the deployment of innovative and advanced transportation systems.
While in the private sector, he was a Design Engineeer with DeLeuw, Cather Engineers which was the General Engineering Consultant responsible for the design and coordination of the new Wasington, DC metrorail system. Mr. Boenau's responsibilities included the design coordination of two lines of the new metrorail system among engineers, planners, public officials, numerous government agencies and a variety of citizen groups.
With Andrews & Clark Engineers, Mr. Boenau was responsible for the identification and layout of safety and operational improvements to the Bethpage State Parkway in New York to accommodate unique changes in usage from a recreational road to a commuter highway.
With the Florida Department of Transportation, he was the Highway Technician responsible for monitoring and testing components of the highway construction projects underway in Southwest Florida and was also the Lab Technician in the Gainesville Research and Materials Laboratory with the primary task of assuring that the construction was progressing consistent with the approved specifications and design.
