Abstract: The reliability of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure during natural disasters is paramount for ensuring effective evacuation and response strategies, especially in regions vulnerable to such events. As EVs increasingly dominate the transportation landscape, disruptions to their essential infrastructure, such as charging stations, can profoundly hinder evacuation efficiency and safety. This study delves into the vulnerabilities of the EV charging network during a county-wide evacuation in Florida, a state frequently confronted by hurricanes and tropical storms. Using a multilayered network analysis, the study integrates the electric grid with road networks, shedding light on their intricate interdependencies. Central to this investigation are resiliency metrics such as tolerance to random failure. These metrics comprehensively evaluate the network’s resiliency during natural disasters. Additionally, centrality metrics are employed to rank the significance of individual infrastructure nodes within this framework, which later can be used to improve the overall network resiliency through selected enhancement. Real-world data on EV ownership, supporting infrastructure, and historical disaster impacts further refine our realistic simulation scenarios. Our findings evaluate potential critical vulnerabilities across the electric and transportation infrastructure that may impact the EV evacuation efforts during a natural disaster. These insights are poised to guide policymakers, urban planners, and emergency response teams in crafting strategies that fortify Florida’s EV charging infrastructure’s resilience during expansive evacuations.
